IMA Hartford Chapter - April 18, 2017
Speaker: Kate Mattias – Executive Director, National Alliance on Mental Illness - Connecticut
Topic: “The Silent Tsunami in the Workplace: Mental Health”
Kate Mattias, Executive Director, NAMI Connecticut (National Alliance on Mental Illness) has a Master’s Degree in Public Health from Columbia University in New York City and a Law Degree from Quinnipiac University School of Law in Hamden, CT. She has been with NAMI Connecticut since 2006.
In that time she has brought a strong focus on: Education courses and support groups for families with children and adolescents who have mental illness - including a Spanish language course; Resources and supports for individuals living with mental illness with an increasing emphasis on young adults and veterans and their family members; Schools and educators to offer information and resources on early detection and early intervention of childhood mental illness; and addressing health inequity issues related to mental health.
The organization provides more than 75 community presentations a year on topics ranging from children’s mental health to the mental health of older adults. Each May, during Mental Health Awareness Month, NAMI Connecticut hosts a Walk in Bushnell Park in Hartford to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness as well as raise funds for the organization.

IMA Hartford Chapter representatives visited Westfield State University, University of Hartford, Quinnipiac, Goodwin Tech, Elms College, and University of New Haven in 2016. Targeting future management accounting students, the chapter representatives presented information about the Institute of Management Accountants and the professional certifications offered. We have other visits scheduled in 2017 to Bay Path and Post University.
