President's Message

Greetings Fellow Members,

Our April meeting speaker, Jeremy Bentley did a great job presenting to our group on how measure management affects business and everyday life. In his presentation he shared information on his research study results on operational and reporting distortions and how overcoming noise and bias can help to control performance measures. The information presented was a nice reminder to us that just because it’s legal, doesn’t mean it’s ethical.

Part of our Hartford Chapter mission is to support our rising stars in the accounting and finance profession. At the meeting, a number of accounting students were recognized and awarded with scholarships for their impressive academic achievements and their leadership acumen. Professor Mohamed Hussein from UCONN awarded two UCONN students, Madisyn Silva and Rachel Zhang, with our IMA Larry Webster scholarships. And Professor Marie Kulesza from CCSU awarded Veronica Heigel with our IMA CCSU scholarship. We took the opportunity to remind our members, professors and these students, that Global also offers a lucrative student CMA Scholarship including all fees, study materials and three year membership. We congratulate our scholars and wish them well in their continued studies.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the fantastic April meeting held by the IMA NorthEast Regional Council. It was hosted by Springfield Technical Community College which provided a fantastic venue for the members who gathered from NERC’s region of New England and Upper New York. If you didn’t attend, I can tell you that you missed some really great and timely talks on Data Governance (thank you Peter Sheldrick, Hartford Chapter member) and SASB/Sustainability Accounting (guest speaker Robert Ronan). NERC’s quarterly meetings are held on Saturday mornings and end with a lunch on site.

We are about to wrap up our year and transition to our new board. Our planning meetings for the new fiscal year will begin in June. Watch for information on meetings; any member is welcome to attend. If you have speakers or topic suggestions to offer, please do not hesitate to email me or any Board member.
